So What Actually Is This Game?

A friend reads you a setup. A man walks into a restaurant and orders turtle soup. He takes one sip, puts down his spoon, goes home, and shoots himself. Why?

You start asking. She says yes, no, or irrelevant. The next forty minutes are a blur of questions — about the soup, the restaurant, the man, things you'd never think to ask about any of them. And then someone asks the right question, and she says yes, and the whole thing snaps into place.

That's a lateral thinking puzzle. One person holds a short, bizarre story. Everyone else asks questions until the truth falls out. The turtle soup puzzle is the most famous one in the entire genre — it gave the game its name across most of Asia. The answer is not what you think. I won't spoil it here.

Rules

One person knows the full story — the answer. Everyone else asks questions that can only be answered "yes", "no", or "irrelevant."

You win when you reconstruct the complete story. Not "a version that could work" — the specific one the host is holding. If your explanation makes sense but isn't the answer, a good host says "that's not the story I have." That gap — between "makes sense" and "is correct" — is the entire game.

Why it's called "turtle soup"

English speakers call this "lateral thinking puzzles" or "situation puzzles." Germans call it "Black Stories," after a 2004 card game that turned it into a party hit.

Across China, Japan, and Korea, everyone calls it "turtle soup." In the early 2000s, the puzzle you just read was circulating on Japanese forums. In 2004, a publisher put it on the cover of a book: ウミガメのスープ — Turtle Soup. The book was a hit, and a Chinese translation followed the next year. Two decades later, the name is so universal that most Chinese players don't know the game has any other name.

Why you can't stop

It's not the answers. The answers, honestly, are often ridiculous. What hooks you is the moment — usually fifteen or twenty questions in — when you realize you've been assuming something that was never said.

Maybe someone mentioned "soup" and you've been picturing a bowl in a kitchen. Maybe someone said "he went home" and you assumed he walked. The puzzle built those assumptions for you — you did the rest. And the moment you notice one, a whole swarm of new questions opens up. That's the drug.
