Story
I have been living alone long-term in an old residential building in the suburbs of the city. I keep a regular daily routine, am cautious by nature, and pay extra close attention to safety details of my living environment.
Every night after dark, I habitually patrol every corner of my home, checking the front door lock, sliding balcony windows, bathroom vent, and every gap that connects to the outside, confirming everything is closed and secured to eliminate any possibility of an outsider breaking in.
The entire building has a very low occupancy rate, with very few neighbors. It is extremely quiet at night, I can barely hear any extra human voices or noise, and the surrounding environment has long been quiet and desolate.
Just yesterday late at night, I carefully completed my full home safety check as usual, locked all doors and windows, pulled tight the blackout curtains to block out all outside light and movement, then lay safely in bed ready to fall asleep.
Throughout the night while I slept, I did not hear any knocking on the door, tapping on the window, or footsteps, nor did I hear any strange unfamiliar sounds, sound vibrations or faint rustling of items being moved. It was completely silent outside the whole night, with no abnormal movement at all.
When the sky brightened slightly in the early morning, I slowly woke up and got out of bed, ready to start a new day of my routine. But when I walked out of the bedroom and looked towards the center of the living room,
An extremely subtle yet incredibly eerie change appeared before my eyes. This change is inconspicuous, not gory, not terrifying, there are no bodies, no blood, no signs of damage, and no obvious traces left by an intruder.
Doors and windows are completely intact, the locks have no pry marks, walls and floors are complete, furniture is arranged neatly, all my valuables are fully preserved, nothing is lost or damaged.
But even this single subtle abnormal change instantly made my scalp tingle and my spine run cold. I clearly realized that I had been in danger the entire night, so I did not hesitate, immediately picked up my phone and called the police for help.
