Night Shift Janitor
Night Shift Janitor
I work as a night shift janitor at a shopping mall. I only start cleaning every day after the mall closes and all customers have left. This night was just like any other: the entire building was dead quiet, the only sound was the rolling of my mop cart, and the security guard in the monitoring room would occasionally chat with me over the walkie-talkie. I cleaned floor by floor, and when I got to the women's clothing section on the third floor, I caught a faint fishy stench. I assumed it was some rotting garbage somewhere, didn't think much of it, and kept wiping the mirrors in the fitting rooms. The door of one of the fitting rooms was ajar. I reached out and pushed it open. The room was empty, save for a small dark puddle on the floor. I mopped up the puddle and was about to leave, when I caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye that something was off with the fitting room mirror. In the mirror, there was a person standing right behind me. I spun around sharply, but there was nothing behind me at all, completely empty. My hair stood on end, I quickly called the security guard over the walkie-talkie, but all I got was static rustle, no response from the guard at all. I didn't dare stay any longer, I pushed my janitor cart and ran for the elevators. The elevator took forever to arrive, so I turned and bolted for the emergency exit stairwell. The motion-activated lights in the stairwell went out one by one every few steps I took. I ran for my life down the stairs all the way to the ground floor lobby. All the lights in the lobby were on, but the space was completely empty, and the main entrance was locked tight. Right then, I heard the mall PA system turn on. The soft background music that usually plays during daytime hours was playing, mixed with a deep, low voice that slowly called out my name. The next day, when the police arrived at the mall, they only found my janitor cart. I was gone without a trace.
