Story
I rent a room alone in an old, aged multi-story residential building. I have a steady daily routine and a quiet, reserved personality, and rarely have any contact or interaction with neighbors who live upstairs or downstairs.
The whole building has very poor sound insulation. Occasionally I can hear faint daily noises from next door on ordinary days, but the overall environment is fairly quiet, with no continuous, regular, strange abnormal noises.
Starting a week ago, every night at a fixed late hour, a uniform, non-stop dripping sound, one drop after another, comes from above my ceiling.
The sound is not loud, but exceptionally clear, repetitive and regular. It appears and disappears on time every day, rain or shine, and never stops.
At first I thought it was just a normal phenomenon caused by a leaking pipe, dripping standing water on the balcony, or moisture seepage from the bathroom of the upstairs resident.
I tried to tolerate it, sleep with earplugs, move my bed away from the sound source, and even gently reminded the upstairs resident to check their home's water, electricity and pipes.
But the upstairs resident clearly told me that all their pipes are intact, the floor is completely dry, there is no leaking or seepage at all, and they have not deliberately poured water to create the sound.
I repeatedly checked the rooftop wall, corner gaps, and the surface of the ceiling, and found no trace of moisture, no water stains, no mold spots at all. Physically, it is impossible for long-term stable dripping to form.
I lock all doors and windows every night, the room is quiet and sealed, there are no outsiders, no wild animals, no vibration from wind.
No rain, no leakage, no standing water, no man-made water pouring, but that regular dripping sound that comes on time every late night still arrives as scheduled every night.
Until one night, I understood the real meaning behind the dripping sound, instantly turned ice-cold all over, and immediately called the police.
