Story

A man lives on the tenth floor. Every day he takes the elevator down to the first floor when he goes to work. When he returns home from work, if he is the only person in the elevator, he will ride to the seventh floor and walk up the stairs the rest of the way; if there are other people in the elevator, or it is raining that day, he will ride directly to the tenth floor. Why is this?
