Story
My name is Lin Xi, an ordinary office worker.
Every morning at 7 o'clock sharp, I buy an Americano, no sugar, from the coffee shop downstairs. The barista is a girl with a ponytail, who always smiles and asks me: "The usual?" then hands me a warm cup of coffee.
Everything was normal until last Wednesday.
I took the coffee as usual, glanced down at the cup sleeve, and there was a small line of text printed on it:
"Test Subject-07, 1048576th Calibration"
I didn't think much of it, assuming it was a promotional code from the coffee shop. But when I got to work that day, I accidentally caught sight of the wall clock in the company hallway — when the second hand reaches 58 seconds, it jumps back slightly, then continues moving forward. I rubbed my eyes, thinking I just hadn't slept well.
The next day, I intentionally observed pedestrians on the street. A woman in a red dress, at the same intersection, the same time, got startled by the same pigeon, then looked down at her phone, every movement exactly the same as before. On the third day, the bus announcer said "Today is July 8, 2026", but my phone clearly showed 2027.
I started to get scared.
I tried to leave the city. When my car reached the end of the suburban highway, what I saw was a grayish-white void just like static on a TV screen. I turned around to drive back, only to find that the road stretches on infinitely, and I can never get back to the urban area.
Yesterday, I opened the wardrobe at my home, and found a line of words carved with a knife in the interlayer of the back panel — the handwriting was mine, but I have no memory of writing it:
"Stop looking for an exit. You are the door."
As I stared at this line of words in a daze, a calm, completely emotionless voice suddenly sounded in my head:
"Warning. Carrier-07 cognitive deviation exceeds limit. Formatting will be executed at 00:00 local time October 1, 2026."
